Puppet Uprising's third bi-monthly cabaret brought a variety of puppeteers exploring a variety of puppetry styles to perform at the Community Education Center in West Philadelphia for two nights. Music and an art exhibit were part of the action, and puppeters ranged from union actors, to community artists, to underage ex-cons who spoke in tongues. No joke.

Chicago puppeteer Rebecca Tennison guest emceed two acts of puppet antics from five companies of puppet artists: Three teenagers from Upper Darby banded together as Immediate Puppets to give us a lesson in language that explored all of the words that begin with Ñ: The 17th Letter of the Spanish Alphabet. Philadelphia's mailboxes, fire hydrants, parking meters, one-way signs and traffic lights banded togther for the first time in Legends Walk The Streets, the first of many puppet shows to explore the urban environs of Beth Pulcinella. Jan Burger from North Carolina's Paperhand Puppet Intervention performed with a six-foot tall hand-painted book about Extinction, each page of which contained a shadow puppet screen that unveiled the histories of dinosaurs and dodos, bison and passenger pigeons, that would be re-adapted into one of Paperhand's giant puppet pageants years later (click the Paperhand link below).

Mum Puppettheatre actor Sondra Blanchard performed a piece in which a girl made from newspaper and yarn is brutalized by a pair of scissors on her walk home from school. Uprising co-founders Twitchy Puppets brought in their uproarious musical epic about one man's quest through flood and fire to find the perfect Brillo Pad in Welcome to Pennsylvania's State Capitol. There was also an Uprising art auction, impromptu oragami by Jodi Netzer, and an exhibition of painted banners by Adam Cook of Vermont's Insurrection Landscapers.
