The Skekses Star Search

A vacant air-conditioned movie theater, on the eve of its demolition, was the impetus for The Cooler Cabaret, a handful of handpuppet shows by artists from around Pennsylvania. For two nights Philadelphians came to see these performances in a place that was never intended for live theater. The "Magic Cinema," as it was dubbed, was later used for the Philly Fringe Festival and then torn down to make way for a highrise complex of shops and student apartments.

About The Cooler Cabaret:

Black Sheep Puppet Festival curators Tom Sarver and Mike Cuccaro came from Pittsburgh with a show about a boisterous bear with an appetite for squirrel meat. Recent UArts alum Eric Cupo had his handpuppets hold an impromptu dating game. The Skekses had their own spin on interstellar encounters with their show "Star Search." Beth Pulcinella built a tower that told of the rise and fall of Philadelphia's Black Bottom neighborhood in "From My Porch." And Morgan F.P. Andrews hosted with a surreal series of Shoddy Puppet sketches that were to become "The Frankenstein of Everyday Life." And accordion-and-drum zydeco duo Sweets & Hots established themselves as a regular musical addition to Puppet Uprising's cabarets.
