What Puppet Uprising does for puppets, Small Change Screenings does for films: to foster a network of local and touring independent artists and present their work to audiences in Philadelphia. With the convergence of several touring artists whose work spans the genres of puppetry, film, music and the spaces in between, it was logical that the two organizations should conspire to put together an evening of multimedia visual performances with live soundtracks.
PENELOPE HILLFRAÜ (formerly of the Bread & Puppet Theater) caame to us from Bologna, Italy with a tabletop puppet show called The Passion of Mr. Right Flag. Ms. Hillfraü began her show in costume as a woman riding a donkey. It was the donkey that spoke to us, not the woman. Hillfraü's magic was in giving voice to the unlikely voices of the world, and they came from the mouths of mutinous mammals, silent fish, and impromptu audience members with printed pages and tin cans in hand. XANDER MARRO and JO DERY, both from Providence, Rhode Island andboth regulars at Puppet Uprising and Small Change events, screened a total of four films with live soundtracks. Then animator/ songwriter BRENT GREEN (Nervous Films) and Carolina indie rock band SIN ROPAS performed an hour of emotionally vivid songs and films.
