GREAT SMALL WORKS are famous for two things: (1) curating international festivals of toy theater, and (2) hosting spaghetti dinner puppet cabarets in Lower Manhattan. In bringing Great Small Works to Philadelphia, the organizers of Puppet Uprising decided to combine these two delicacies. People came to the Rotunda for a plate of spaghetti and then enjoyed an evening of award-winning toy theater performances.
After the audience loaded up on pasta and bread, company member/theater historian John Bell kicked off the show with his infamous musical lecture A SHORT ENTERTAINING HISTORY OF TOY THEATER, followed by a toy theater piece by Great Small Works' "Boston Wing" (John Bell, Isaac Bell and Trudi Cohen) entitled THREE BOOKS IN THE GARDEN, inspired by Maria Rosa Menocal's book, Ornament of the Worldabout a time in medieval Spain when Jews, Christians and Muslims lived side-by-side and supported the flourishing of each other's cultures. Jenny Romaine performed THE BALLAD OF GEORGIO BUSHWACK, an interactive cantastoria (banner show) before the company's final piece: A WALK IN THE CITY, inspired by the writings of Italo Calvino with excerpts from his short story, Marcovaldo, and created by aspiring architect Roberto Rossi. Great Small Works members also gave an afternoon presentation on the work that they do collectively and indivually. They showed video of the Rising Tide Parade that they performed as part of the 2006 River-to-River festival in lower Manhattan, snippets of their work with the Sukkus Mob and Chinese Theater Works, as well as footage from their Toy Theater of Terror as Usual series and the International Festival of Toy Theater in Brooklyn.
